NAE Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education

2023

The Bernard M. Gordon Prize was started in 2001 by the United States National Academy of Engineering. Its purpose is to recognize leaders in academia for the development of new educational approaches to engineering. Each year, the Gordon Prize awards $500,000 to the grantee, of which the recipient may personally use $250,000, and his or her institution receives $250,000 for the ongoing support of academic development.  Although the Gordon Prize is relatively new, within engineering education, it is viewed by many to be the American equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

 

​IEEE Simon Ramo Medal

2023

The IEEE Simon Ramo Medal recognizes exceptional achievement in systems engineering and systems science. Established in 1982 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, it honors Dr. Simon Ramo, a pioneering engineer known for leading the development of the U.S. intercontinental ballistic missile. The award is sponsored by Northrop Grumman. Winners receive a bronze medal, a certificate, and a cash prize. The award recognizes proven technical leadership in a major, innovative engineering project; significant influence on modern technology, systems science, or national security; and high originality and breadth of work. Madni was honored for pioneering contributions to model-based systems engineering, education, and industrial impact using interdisciplinary approaches.

ASME Spirit of St. Louis Medal

2026

The ASME Spirit of St. Louis Medal is a top award in aerospace engineering. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) gives it for outstanding service in aeronautics (air flight) and astronautics (space flight). The award was created in 1929. The medal gets its name from the historic airplane Spirit of St. Louis. Charles Lindbergh flew this plane on the first solo, non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927.  Many famous aerospace heroes have won this award. Some well-known winners include: Neil Armstrong (1972) - The first man to walk on the Moon; Charles Draper (2017) - The "father of inertial navigation" (a system that helps planes and rockets find where they are); James (Jimmy) Doolittle (1938) - A famous air pioneer and general; and Dr. Azad Madni (2026) - A modern space systems engineering expert.

AIAA Honorary Fellow

2024

Honorary Fellows are persons of eminence in aeronautics or astronautics, recognized by a long and highly contributive career in the arts, sciences, or technology thereof. The maximum number of Honorary Fellows that may be elected per year is 4, with no more than 3 from the same country. The first Honorary Fellow was Orville Wright, who was named on Founder’s Day of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences (IAS, I) on 26 January 1933. A year later, on 31 January 1934, the IAS had its second annual meeting and elected two Honorary Fellows and 23 Fellows. There have been only 245 distinguished persons elected since the inception of this Honor.

ASME Honorary Member

2024

ASME Honorary Membership is the society’s highest and most prestigious rank, awarded for a lifetime of distinguished service to engineering, science, research, or public service. Established in 1880, the honor is strictly limited to a maximum of five living corporate members each year. Recipients are selected by the ASME Committee on Honors and join an elite group of past honorees that includes historical icons like Thomas Edison and Orville Wright.

IISE Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award

2026

The Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award is a top honor from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). It recognizes professors who make major contributions to the profession through great teaching, research, and leadership. The award typically goes to senior professors with long careers in academia.

Member, National Academy of Artificial Intelligence

2026

Established in 2024, the National Academy of Artificial Intelligence (NAAI) is a global organization for AI researchers, engineers, and innovators. It hosts major international conferences, provides AI-powered academic tools for its members, and manages the Global Scholar Search Database to connect over 1,000 professionals across 85 countries. Election to the National Academy of Artificial Intelligence (NAAI) is a distinction reserved for leading experts, researchers, and pioneers who have shaped the field of AI, machine learning, and associated technologies. Because membership is conferred through a rigorous peer-election and evaluation process, the criteria focus heavily on sustained professional impact and peer recognition.

Fellow, Canadian Academy of Engineering

2026

The Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) Fellowship is one of the highest honors for engineers in Canada. It recognizes those who have made outstanding, career-long contributions to engineering and society. New members are nominated and elected by their peers using the post-nominals FCAE. CAE honors engineers in business, academia, and government who have served society with excellence.

SWE Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award

2025

The Society of Women Engineers’ Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award recognizes an individual (male) or a company who has contributed significantly to the acceptance and advancement of women in the fields of engineering technology or science related to engineering. Dr. Azad Madni, who has been the recipient of a litany of honors including the NAE Gordon Prize, the IEEE Simon Ramo Award, and the recognition as AIAA honorary fellow, is the 2025 recipient of this award for his abiding commitment to championing the advancement of women engineering students and professionals in industry, academia, and government.

USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching

2026

This is the highest honor University of Southern California bestows upon faculty for their exceptional achievements in teaching. The University confers up to 2 awards of $3,500 to be presented at the Academic Honors Convocation. The award acknowledges the achievements of faculty who transform students’ understanding of themselves, their field of study, or the world, and who advance students’ professional growth and leadership skills.

​​USC Associates Award for Creativity in Research and Scholarship

2025

This is the highest honor the University of Southern California bestows upon its faculty members for distinguished intellectual and scholarly achievements. This award is designed to celebrate breakthrough impacts across the university's diverse academic fields. The award specifically recognizes foundational contributions that change how a field is understood. Evaluation is based on: Source of Creativity - the impact can stem from a single, brilliant breakthrough idea or a highly cohesive, massive lifetime body of work; Nature of Impact - the scholar's work must significantly impact a specific discipline, pioneer breakthroughs at the interface of multiple disciplines, or create entirely new fields of study; Global Standing: Nominees must be recognized by their peers as among the top few scholars in the world within their broad area of expertise; and  USC Affiliation - the core research or scholarship being recognized must have been performed while the nominee served as a faculty member at USC.​​

Fellow, Association of Computing Machinery

2024

ACM's most prestigious member grade recognizes the top 1% of ACM members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community. Candidates for Fellow must have at least 5 years of Professional Membership within the last 10 years. Dr. Madni’s citation is “for technical leadership in advancing augmented intelligence and machine learning for aerospace and automotive systems.”

Fellow, Society of Manufacturing Engineers

2025

An SME Fellow is a highly prestigious award given by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. It recognizes members who have given 20 years or more of outstanding service to the manufacturing field. Fellows carry the letters FSME after their name. To earn this honor, an SME member in good standing, should have made a big impact in three areas - Research: Discovering new ways to make parts, build cars, or fly planes; Education: Teaching the next generation of engineers; and Leadership: Managing big engineering teams or running large programs. It is essentially a Hall of Fame for people who invent new tools, write important rulebooks, and run factories.

​​Washington Academy of Sciences (WAS) Distinguished Career Award

2024

The WAS Distinguished Career Award is the highest honor given by the Washington Academy of Sciences. It celebrates lifetime achievement, honoring scientists and scholars in the D.C. region who have made a major impact on their specific fields. It recognizes exceptional scientific achievements, lifelong contributions, and outstanding leadership. It is awarded across many areas including computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, and healthcare. Dr. Madni received this honor for his seminal contribution to systems engineering.

AIMBE College of Fellows

2024

American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering Fellows represent the top 2% of medical and biological engineers. They include the most accomplished medical and biological engineers in academia, industry, education, clinical practice, and government. 4 AIMBE Fellows are Nobel Prize winners, 14 AIMBE Fellows have received the Presidential Medal of Technology and Innovation, 16 AIMBE Fellows have received the Presidential Medal of Science, 260 AIMBE Fellows are members of the NAE, 135 AIMBE Fellows are members of the NAM, and 61 AIMBE Fellows are members of the NAS.

 

​​IEEE Systems Man and Cybernetics Norbert Wiener Outstanding Research Award

2020

The IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC) Society presents the Norbert Wiener Award. It is the highest research award in the field of cybernetics. It honors Norbert Wiener, the "Father of Cybernetics". The award includes a $5,000 prize and a plaque. The award honors long-term, significant contributions to systems science, human-machine systems, or cybernetics over 10 or more years. Dr. Azad M. Madni received the 2020 IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society Norbert Wiener Outstanding Research Award with the official citation: "For fundamental contributions to adaptive human-machines and intelligent decision aiding technology using model-based engineering approaches."

 

​​IEEE AESS Judith A. Resnik Space Award

2021

The IEEE Judith A. Resnik Space Award is a technical field award presented by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to either an individual, or a team, "for outstanding contributions to space engineering within the fields of interest of the IEEE". The award is named in honor of Judith A. Resnik, a mission specialist, killed when the Space Shuttle Challenger disintegrated during launch in January 1986 and was established later that year. Recipients receive a bronze medal, certificate, and honorarium. Dr. Madni was honored “for leading the development of Model Based Testing Methods and Software for Shuttle Navigation System and sustained excellence in aerospace systems research and education.”

 

​​IEEE AESS Pioneer Award

2019

The IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) Pioneer Award is the society's highest honor. It recognizes individuals or teams whose foundational work has led to the creation of aerospace and electronic systems that are still used today. The honored contributions must have been made at least 20 years before the award year to ensure historical perspective. Winners receive a $3,000 honorarium, an award plaque, and partial travel expenses to attend the award ceremony. Dr. Azad Madni was honored for his pioneering contributions to advanced simulation-based training and intelligent decision aiding for aerospace systems.

 

​​AIAA/ASEE John Leland Atwood Award

2019

The J. Leland Atwood Award, established in 1985, is jointly sponsored by AIAA and the ASEE Aerospace Division. It is bestowed annually upon an aerospace engineering educator in recognition of outstanding contributions to the profession. Atwood entered aviation when it was little more than experimentation in a daring sport. Nevertheless, he believed that this new field would be a cornerstone of our national security and serve as a principal medium of world commerce. As an outstanding engineer and a leader of a great corporation, Atwood played a major role in the development of aviation and aerospace technologies for more than 50 years. Administration of the award resides at ASEE. This annual award, endowed by Rockwell Collins, consists of a honorarium and a certificate presented by ASEE at their summer conference. In addition AIAA presents a certificate of citation and a distinctive engraved medal generally at the AIAA Science and Technology Forum. Dr. Azad M. Madni's official citation for the 2019 AIAA/ASEE John Leland Atwood Award reads: "For exemplary leadership in aerospace systems engineering education and research, and for lasting contributions to the aerospace industry as thought leader, author, educator, researcher and mentor."

 

​​INCOSE Pioneer Award

2011

The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Pioneer Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the organization. It is presented annually to a distinguished individual or team who has made unique, significant, and pioneering contributions to the field. The award specifically recognizes outstanding applications of systems engineering in developing successful products or services that benefit society, advancing the state of the art, or expanding the discipline into entirely new market segments. The award recognized Dr. Azad Madni’s extraordinary impact on the discipline. The citation reads: "For advancing the field of systems engineering through innovative methods, processes and tools." This honor highlights his pioneering contributions to the development of transdisciplinary frameworks, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), and simulation-based training architectures that bridged academic research with critical aerospace and defense applications.
